Discover a side of Germany you’ve never seen before.
The Most Beautiful SUP Spot in Germany
The Eibsee is world-famous. It’s all over Instagram. And to be fair — it is a stunning lake. But because it’s so well known, it often gets incredibly crowded during the summer months.
What most people don’t realise? The true hidden gem lies just a little further along: the Untersee.
This secluded little lake is tucked away on the northeastern edge of the Eibsee. No crowds here — just silence, glassy water, and breathtaking views of the snow-capped Zugspitze.
This is Germany like you’ve never seen it — and arguably at its most beautiful.
In this blog, you’ll discover why the Untersee is the SUP destination you don’t want to miss this summer. It’s ideal for both beginners and experienced paddleboarders — and just as enjoyable with a kayak or packraft.
Untersee – The Hidden Gem Next to the Eibsee
You’d hardly believe it, but this peaceful lake is only a short walk from the main Eibsee shoreline. While hundreds of people float around on the Eibsee, you could be gliding in total peace across the Untersee — where the water is even clearer and you can see straight to the bottom.
It’s one of the few spots in southern Germany where you can SUP so close to the mountains. The reflection of the Zugspitze on the water is surreal — and if you go at the right time, you might just have the lake all to yourself.
Launch your board from a small shore on the northeast side. There are no rentals, no crowds — just nature. It feels like a secret escape.
Why paddleboarding at the Eibsee & Untersee is so special
- Crystal-clear water – even clearer than the Eibsee itself
- Shallow depth – perfect for beginner paddleboarders
- Peace & quiet – no mass tourism, no noise
- Mountain views – like paddling through a postcard
Practical Information
Starting Point
You can park at the Eibsee Hotel for around €8 per day. The best time to arrive is early in the morning to avoid the crowds. From the hotel, paddle out onto the lake and look to your right — you’ll see a small bridge. Just beyond it lies the Untersee, where the water turns unbelievably clear.
Alternatively, follow the trail on the northeastern side of the Eibsee.
Best Time to Go
Early morning or just before sunset. That’s when the water is calm, the light is golden, and you’re most likely to have the place to yourself.
A Few Things to Note
There are no facilities at the water — bring everything you need.
Respect nature: no littering, no loud music.
What to Bring
- A Paddleboard (like the Stardupp Elite series)
- Waterproof drybag with snacks & at least 1L of water per person
- Water shoes – the shoreline is rocky
- Sunscreen
- Sunglasses with a floating strap – the water reflects brightly
- Optional: snorkel mask to explore the clear bottom
Make the Most of Your Day
If you’re already here, make a full day of it. Combine your SUP session with a walk around the Eibsee (7.5 km), or take the cable car to the top of the Zugspitze. For lunch or a drink, head to the mountain restaurant on the southern edge of the Eibsee — the view is unforgettable.
Want to avoid the crowds completely? Go on a weekday or visit outside peak season (May, June or September). That’s when the Untersee feels like your very own private alpine lake.
The Untersee is a uniquely beautiful, peaceful, and almost magical SUP destination. It’s perfect for anyone looking to escape the crowds and discover a completely different side of Germany.
